Formula debate
i'm getting to nurse elliot a lot since the thrush is gone, so of course my milk is making its comeback. that's a good thing since we want to continue to be able to nurse him and give him a bottle when he needs one. i like the freedom of bottle feeding! but soon our coupons will run out for the similac advanced we've been using. dan wants to switch him to a store brand - the sam's/wal-mart brand - when the coupons run out. i don't want to do it AT ALL!! he's read the ingredients and he says they have the same dha/rha as enfamil and similac do, but the sam's/wal-mart brand are obviously cheaper. he thinks since i still nurse him why shouldn't we be able to just choose any old brand of formula? i want him to get the best of both worlds; my milk and a good formula. i don't want to cheap out on him.
let me also say i'm not a national brand snob. we buy all kinds of store brands. i personally think kroger store cheese is way better than kraft, and HEB and target brand pull ups are WAY better than huggies or pampers, and we love luvs - they really don't leak. i don't believe store brand products are automatically inferior, so that's not exactly my reasoning for wanting a national brand formula.
so my question is, what formula have you given your children, and what do you think about store brands. stacy, i'm very interested in what your opinion is. also, feel free to let me know what you think regardless of whether or not you have children. AND my lurking friends - you know who you are - i'll turn off the "no anonymous" restriction so you can chime in. i know of at least 3 of you who have bottle fed your little ones. thanks!

Hannah - no formula - she didnt take a bottle..yikes..what was I thinking.
Sarah - Enfamil because that is what we were sent, samples and coupons. That was also what Sams had all the time and I could get it anywhere, heb, target, gas station. I don't remember seeing a Sam's brand, but then again I wasn't looking.
I think that the store brands are just as good as the name brands. It has to be regulated some how. I usually buy the store brand in anything, except the HEB kid yogurt..it is bright red and stains.
My doc said find a brand and stick with it. However I had a friend who used whatever, enfamil, similac, target, walmart, heb. So who knows.
Have you signed up on all the formula site to get free samples and coupons. I remember getting them every month for a year or so.
hmmm, a "comparison" from www.membersmark.com. like they did not rig their numbers to make their formula the best.
can't skimp on oj either.
Michelle we used COSTCO brand for Jadon (after we switched from nursing at 6mths) and for Jamison (actually we tried several and she was able to switch from Enfamil DHA/RHA to the Costco brand easily..
Other than finding out at 2.5 years old that Jadon had a dairy allergy (now PTL his test is negative) we had no issues with formula at all. Our doctor said that she felt the Costco brand was just as good as the Enfamil that it stated was what it was comprable to, and for us it was WAY cheaper, however that was not the main issue.
we totally used the sams brand!!! sorry michelle! i will say that i didn't start using it until andrew was 6 months old. my dr said it doesn't matter b/c they all basically come from the same company. don't know if he really has proof for that, but that's what he says. he did say to make sure it had the dra/ara stuff in it. i would say that if i had to do it again i would use name brand until he/she was 6 months old and then use sams again. i love it b/c it's SO cheap!!! i also went online and signed up for the coupons... similac, enfamil, nestle goodstart (they had the best coupons) and i guess that was it. have a friend sign up...my neighbor did and she didn't supplement so she gave me her coupons!! i'll be curious to know what you decide!
actually, dan, the target froot loops are yummy!
store brand, name brand, it doesn't matter. if it has the same ingredients, give him the cheaper one if he'll take it. i actually did a little research through journals and clinical trials on all that dha/ara stuff for a presentation i did in residency. and even the difference in having that versus formula without it was debatable in a term infant. plus if you are still breastfeeding, he's getting those anyway. i haven't done a recent search through the clinical trials about the dha/ara hype and i couldn't find my powerpoint when i looked for it last night.
but that wasn't your question anyway. if it has the same ingredients, go with the cheaper stuff and save that money for when it counts...like the difference between coca-cola brand and sam's cola. just don't deprive a child of that for that would indeed be neglect... :)
oh my gosh...i HATE sam's cola!!! ewww!
But we know that Matt prefers it. :) I remember you had Sam's coke at your house when we came to visit. :)
Sorry, Michelle, I have no advice about formula. Someday y'all will be such a big help to me though when I have kids. :)
